Opera Company of Boston

The Keith's Memorial was one of his most elaborate designs of the prominent theater architect Thomas W. Lamb. On October 23, 1928, just before the theater opened, the Radio-Keith-Orpheum (RKO) company was formed and became the owner of the theater. The theater opened on October 29, 1928, presenting first-run films along with live vaudeville.[2][3] By 1929, the theater had converted to showing only films and remained a leading Boston movie showcase through the 1950s. It became known as RKO Keith's, and bore signage that said both "B.F. Keith's" and "RKO Keith's" (see the 1938 photo shown at right). While an opera program does exist at Interlochen, where Banfield has been an artist in residence since 2021, productions are usually modest and mounted in the school’s small chapel.

Boston Ballet Presents 'Spring Experience'

The Boston Opera House, also known as the Citizens Bank Opera House,[1] is a performing arts and esports venue located at 539 Washington St. in Boston, Massachusetts. Keith Memorial Theatre, a movie palace in the Keith-Albee chain. The chain became part of RKO when it was established just before the theater opened on October 29, 1928, and it was also known as the RKO Keith's Theater. After operating for more than 50 years as a movie theater, it was rededicated in 1980 as a home for the Opera Company of Boston, which performed there until the opera company closed down in 1990 due to financial problems. The theater was reopened in 2004 after a major restoration, and it currently serves as the home of the Boston Ballet and also hosts touring Broadway shows.

Bill Banfield’s ‘Edmonia’ celebrates a sculptor who carved her own niche

All guests entering the theater, regardless of age, must have a ticket. “The reason we know anything about Edmonia,” Banfield said, is the work of Massachusetts-based art historian Marilyn Richardson, who found “The Death of Cleopatra” languishing in an Illinois shopping mall storeroom in 1988 under a coat of latex house paint. Much of the libretto is informed by Richardson’s work, and the first part of Act II takes place in Boston, where Lewis lived and worked for two years before departing for Europe. Only a handful of high schools in the country mount operas, and the demands of solo operatic singing are beyond most young voices. However, “Edmonia” is more of a “hybrid opera,” Miller and Banfield both said. Between the cast, crew, and orchestra, Miller estimated that between 20 and 25 percent of Interlochen’s 550-strong student body is working on “Edmonia,” and still more are participating in other capacities.

“You can sing the songs, but it isn’t ‘sing-songy music,’” said Banfield, the founding director of the Africana Studies department at Berklee College of Music, who received a President’s Call to Service Award from the Biden administration last fall. One of the most cherished and recognizable classical moments in dance history, Florence Clerc after Marius Petipa’s Kingdom of the Shades features 24 dancers in unison, entering the stage in synchronized lines. A moment of sheer beauty, it is as mesmerizing to watch as it is difficult to perform. The opening sequence is followed by a classical pas de deux (dance for two) between lovers. The ballet is a perfect example of how Boston Ballet is preserving the absolute best of ballet’s legacy while leaving behind the outdated and problematic storytelling of the ballet.
